Fraktur Symposium.  The Free Library of Philadelphia Rare Book Department will host a symposium featuring leading scholars in the fields of fraktur and Pennsylvania German studies, sponsored by the Barra Foundation as part of a major project to re-catalog the FLP fraktur collection and make it available in an online database.  Charles Hummel, co-curator of the 1983 exhibition The Pennsylvania Germans: A Celebration of their Arts, will deliver the keynote address on Pennsylvania German history and decorative arts.  Lisa Minardi from the Winterthur Museum will then set the focus of the day by examining fraktur in Europe and America. A series of talks on specific groups of fraktur will follow; including Michael Showalter speaking on Ephrata fraktur; Mennonite Arts author Clarke Hess on Mennonite fraktur; and Candace Perry from the Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center on fraktur made by Schwenkfelder women.  The afternoon session will feature a live demo of the FLP fraktur database and a panel discussion on the importance of fraktur research for the 21st century including fraktur researcher and genealogy specialist Corinne Earnest, fraktur collector Joan Johnson, and Joel Clemmer, webmaster of the site Frakturweb.org.  Renowned Pennsylvania German scholar Dr. Don Yoder will conclude the symposium with a look at future directions for fraktur research.

A selection of fraktur from the FLP collection will be on exhibition from July 6th to November 10, and available for viewing during the lunch break and a reception following the symposium.
